After the Lord was baptized, the heavens were opened, and the Spirit descended upon him like a dove, and the voice of the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. (see Mt 3:16-17)

FIRST READING

A reading from the book of Isaiah

Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold. (42:1-4,6-7)

Thus says the LORD:
Here is my servant whom I uphold,
     my chosen one with whom I am pleased,
upon whom I have put my spirit;
     he shall bring forth justice to the nations,
not crying out, not shouting,
     not making his voice heard in the street.
A bruised reed he shall not break,
     and a smoldering wick he shall not quench,
until he establishes justice on the earth;
     the coastlands will wait for his teaching.
I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice,
     I have grasped you by the hand;
I formed you, and set you
     as a covenant of the people,

is acceptable to him.
You know the word that he sent to the Israelites 
as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all,

beginning in Galilee after the baptism

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan
to be baptized by him.
John tried to prevent him, saying,
“I need to be baptized by you,
and yet you are coming to me?”
Jesus said to him in reply,
“Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us
to fulfill all righteousness.”
Then he allowed him.
After Jesus was baptized,
he came up from the water and behold,
the heavens were opened for him,
and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove
and coming upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens, saying,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
(at the words that follow up to and including and became man, all bow)
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

Our response is: Lord, hear our prayer.

For the Church – that all the baptized live out our calling of unity, as members of the one body of Christ, and take up the mission of Jesus, which is shared with us through our baptism. Lord, hear our prayer.

For all who have been hurt by the Church – that wounded hearts will heal, broken lives be restored, and trust that is crushed, will flourish again. Lord, hear our prayer.

For the leaders of nations – that as new waves of the pandemic arise, leaders will act with wisdom, prudence and compassion. Lord, hear our prayer.

For all who are baptized – that Christ who dwells within us will bring us to unity, and that through our common baptism we will grow more like Christ; loving, forgiving, lifting up the weary and healing the broken-hearted.  Lord, hear our prayer.

For ourselves – that we may we realize our unity and dignity as a community of disciples who have been baptised in water and the Spirit, and called to be one in Christ. Lord, hear our prayer.

Preface of the Baptism of the Lord

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.
For in the waters of the Jordan
you revealed with signs and wonders a new Baptism,
so that through the voice that came down from heaven
we might come to believe in your Word dwelling among us,
and by the Spirit’s descending in the likeness of a dove
we might know that Christ your Servant
has been anointed with the oil of gladness
and sent to bring the good news to the poor.
