My brother and sisters, to prepare ourselves to celebrate the mysterier, let us call to mind our sins.

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

FIRST READING

A reading from the Book of the prophet Isaiah

I will also make You a light of the nations. (49:3, 5-6)

The LORD said to me: You are my servant,
Israel, through whom I show my glory.
Now the LORD has spoken
who formed me as his servant from the womb,
that Jacob may be brought back to him
and Israel gathered to him;
and I am made glorious in the sight of the LORD,
and my God is now my strength!
It is too little, the LORD says, for you to be my servant,
to raise up the tribes of Jacob,
and restore the survivors of Israel;
I will make you a light to the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John

Glory to you, Lord.

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
He is the one of whom I said,
‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me
because he existed before me.’
I did not know him,
but the reason why I came baptizing with water
was that he might be made known to Israel.”
John testified further, saying,
“I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven
and remain upon him.
I did not know him,
but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,
he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
(at the words that follow up to and including and became man, all bow)
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,

For the Church – that as we learn to walk in a synodal way we will seek guidance and be led by the light of the Holy Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer.

For all community and national leaders – that their decision-making will be underpinned by care of people and care of the planet. Lord, hear our prayer.

For Catechumens and all preparing for baptism  – that friends, family, sponsors and God-parents will support and encourage them on their journey toward baptism in Christ, light of the world. Lord, hear our prayer.

For people who serve the community in voluntary capacities – that they will be motivated by care and compassion and find reward in their work. Lord, hear our prayer.

For users of social media – that people protect the dignity of their mind, retain the capacity to distinguish between truth and falsehood, and strive for what is good and right. Lord, hear our prayer.

For our common home – that people develop a fresh appreciation for the beauty of the natural world, enjoy its capacity to renew and refresh us and strive to care for the planet. Lord, hear our prayer.
