My brother and sisters, to prepare ourselves to celebrate the mysterier, let us call to mind our sins.

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

FIRST READING

A reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah

The ears of the deaf will be unstopped. And the tongue of the dumb will shout for joy. ( 35:4-7a )

Thus says the LORD:
    Say to those whose hearts are frightened:
        Be strong, fear not!
    Here is your God,
        he comes with vindication;
    with divine recompense
        he comes to save you.
    Then will the eyes of the blind be opened,
        the ears of the deaf be cleared;
    then will the lame leap like a stag,
        then the tongue of the mute will sing.
    Streams will burst forth in the desert,
        and rivers in the steppe.
    The burning sands will become pools, 
        and the thirsty ground, springs of water.

A reading from the Letter of James

Did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom. (2:1-5)

My brothers and sisters, show no partiality
as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.
For if a man with gold rings and fine clothes
comes into your assembly,
and a poor person in shabby clothes also comes in,
and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes
and say, “Sit here, please, ”
while you say to the poor one, “Stand there, ” or “Sit at my feet, ”
have you not made distinctions among yourselves
and become judges with evil designs?
Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters.
Did not God choose those who are poor in the world
to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom
that he promised to those who love him?

Glory to you, Lord.

Again Jesus left the district of Tyre
and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,
into the district of the Decapolis. 
And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment
and begged him to lay his hand on him.
He took him off by himself away from the crowd. 
He put his finger into the man’s ears
and, spitting, touched his tongue;
then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him,
“Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” —
And immediately the man’s ears were opened,
his speech impediment was removed,
and he spoke plainly. 
He ordered them not to tell anyone. 
But the more he ordered them not to,
the more they proclaimed it. 
They were exceedingly astonished and they said,
“He has done all things well. 
He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
(at the words that follow up to and including and became man, all bow)
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

Our response is: Lord, hear our prayer.

For the Church – that the Church, in this time of uncertainty and fear, will be a voice of compassion, accompanying those who are fearful, and sharing faith in God, who walks beside us.  Let us pray to the Lord.  

For world leaders – that the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor will not be lost on them, but that they will use their power to bring about sustainable practices in communities, in businesses and in peoples lives at all levels. Let us pray to the Lord.  

For all whose lives have been impacted by devastating weather or fire events – that in their devastation, the flower of love will grow, and people will be surrounded by care, and generous support from friends, family, and local and national government. Let us pray to the Lord.

For all who are troubled by fear, anxiety or depression – that through the constant care of friends and family, they will be touched by, and come to trust, the peace of Christ that surpasses understanding. Let us pray to the Lord.

For all Christian people – that we will burn with desire to protect and care for our Common home, the Earth; its water, its fields, its land, its air, its life. Let us pray to the Lord.
